The Mexican Women’s national team caused a stir at the 2024 W Gold Cup by defeating the favorites, the United States, in the final game of Group A of the competition. With this 2-0 result – which we brought you live – La Tri secured the group’s top spot and now await their next opponent in the quarterfinals.

Currently, with seven points from a draw and two victories, the Mexican team is positioned as the leader of the overall group stage rankings which would pit them against the lowest ranked team in the next round. However, they could be overtaken by Canada and Brazil, who currently have two wins each. If these teams secure three points, they will surpass the Mexican team, pushing them into third and a clash with the sixth ranked team of the eight that qualify.

Potential opponents for Mexico in quarterfinals

Given the tight competition in Groups B and C, Mexico could face one of the four teams vying for second or third place. Colombia, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, and Paraguay are in contention to qualify as second-placed teams, as all four teams currently have three points. The opponent for Mexico in the next stage will be determined following the final group games on Wednesday 28 February.
