Why isn’t Haaland playing for Manchester City against Crvena zvezda in UCL?
Erling Haaland stayed behind in Manchester as the Champions League holders visited Crvena zvezda in the final round of Group G games.
Manchester City will be without star striker Erling Haaland when they close out the Champions League group stage with a clash against Crvena zvezda in Belgrade today.
Hobbled Haaland sits misses City’s Serbia trip
The Norwegian, who is the competition’s joint-top scorer this season with five goals, has not travelled to Serbia as he is suffering from a foot injury.
The issue saw Haaland sit out City’s weekend Premier League win over Luton Town, and head coach Pep Guardiola says he’s not sure whether the 23-year-old will be able to return to action against Crystal Palace on Saturday.
“I don’t know right now [whether Haaland will be back in time to face Palace],” Guardiola told reporters on Tuesday. “Next press conference [on Friday] I could be more precise about his conditions.”
Guardiola added that he expects Haaland to return to training on Thursday.
Ederson, Doku also miss out for City
City’s Group G match against Crvena zvezda is a dead rubber: the tournament holders have already wrapped up top spot, and the hosts are guaranteed to finish bottom.
Haaland is joined on the sidelines by goalkeeper Ederson, who has been ruled out of today’s game due to illness; winger Jéremy Doku, who is struggling with a muscle problem; and long-term absentee Kevin de Bruyne.
