Why isn’t Tim Weah playing for the USMNT against Panama? Injury update
The forward will not feature in Pochettino’s side in their game against Panama.
The Pochettino era begins tonight against Panama (9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT.) amid a wave of injuries that has impacted the national team roster. Several key players, including Gio Reyna, Sergiño Dest, and Tyler Adams, are among those affected.
In the days leading up to the “Stars and Stripes” squad announcement, Pochettino received news of yet another setback: Tim Weah, a Juventus forward, sustained a new injury. Despite already experiencing two previous issues, Weah had been a crucial player at the Allianz Stadium.
What injury does Weah have? When will he be back?
According to Juventus, Weah suffered an ankle injury late last month, which has kept him sidelined for two weeks. Although he has returned to training, it was decided, as a precaution, that he would not be called up for the upcoming international break.
Sky Sports Italia reports that the New York native is expected to return to action on October 19, when Juventus hosts Lazio. Weah has already faced two injuries this season, with the first occurring in late August, sidelining him for nearly a month due to hamstring discomfort.
Weah out along with Cardoso and Balogun
That first setback erased all the momentum Weah had built at Juventus, where he had been a first-choice starter under coach Thiago Motta, even scoring on his debut against Cesc Fabregas’ Como. After recovering, Weah alternated between starting and coming off the bench, sharing minutes with Francisco Conceição, the team’s breakout star early in the season.
Weah is expected to be available for the November international break. The son of the Ballon d’Or winner has always been a key figure for the USMNT, and under Pochettino, his importance is unlikely to diminish. Weah’s return is anticipated for the Nations League quarterfinals, where he’ll aim to help secure another win and move closer to another title.
As well as Weah, Pochettino is also without Folarin Balogun and Johnny Cardoso, who are both injured.
The international friendly between the USMNT and Panama will be played at Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas, on Saturday October 12, 2024. Kick-off is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT.
