Why isn’t Tyler Adams playing for Bournemouth against Newcastle in the Premier League?

The midfielder played for the USMNT in the 2024 Copa América but misses the start of the new club season in England.

USMNT midfielder Tyler Adams is set to play in the Premier League for the third successive season in 2024/25, although exactly when remains to be seen. The New Yorker missed Bournemouth’s opening-weekend draw at Nottingham Forest, doesn’t feature against Newcastle on Sunday (August 25) either and isn’t expected to be available for at least another few weeks.

Adams’ Premier League troubles

In truth, Adams hasn’t enjoyed the best of fortune since moving from RB Leipzig in Germany to the Premier League in July 2022. He suffered relegation at the end of his first season with Leeds United, not helped by the fact he missed the last two months of the campaign due to injury.

He then transferred to current club Bournemouth, where he has never been able to get going. He was forced to sit out almost all of last season due to a hamstring injury, making just three league appearances and playing only 118 minutes for The Cherries, the last of which was a short cameo as a substitute against Brentford on May 11.

What injury does Tyler Adams have? When will he be back?

Nevertheless, he started all three of the USMNT’s 2024 Copa América games in the summer, although he was substituted at halftime in the first two of them after suffering back spasms.

That eventually led to him having surgery in the middle of July, with Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola unable to offer a potential return date. “It is difficult to say how long but he won’t be fit for the start of the season,” the Spaniard said during a press conference a few weeks ago. “But September? October? I don’t know.”

Only two American players have played in the Premier League so far this season, with Antonee Robinson and Chris Richards starting both of Fulham and Crystal Palace’s games respectively. Goalkeeper Matt Turner has fallen out of favour at Nottingham Forest, but new Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler adds another link to the United States.
