Club América already have the most valuable squad in the Apertura 2023, but their incoming transfer business may not be over just yet. The Liga MX giants’ president, Santiago Baños, has left the door open for more summer arrivals at the Estadio Azteca.

“We could yet strengthen further”

“As long as the transfer window is still open, there’s always the possibility of bringing players in,” Baños told an interview with Claro Sports. “We could leave things as they are, but equally one or two more could come in.

“It’s by no means a sure thing, but there’s a good chance that we could yet strengthen our squad further.”

Defender to be added to América ranks?

América still have room for one more foreigner in their squad - Liga MX rules allow a maximum of nine - and this available berth could be filled by a defensive signing, given the recent issues with the 13-time Mexican champions’ backline.

André Jardine, who replaced Fernando Ortiz as head coach in June, is thought to be eager to sign a centre-back.

So far this summer, América have brought in Mexico right-back Kevin Álvarez from Pachuca, and Colombian striker Julián Quiñones from Atlas.

Las Águilas, who reached the semi-finals of the Clausura 2023, began their Apertura 2023 campaign with a surprise 2-1 home defeat to FC Juárez on 30 June.
