Will Colorado Rapids’ Moise Bombito join Ligue 1 club Lyon?
Defender Moise Bombito, who is currently on 2024 Copa América duty with Canada, is reportedly being targeted by Lyon.
French club Lyon are reportedly chasing the signing of Colorado Rapids defender Moise Bombito, who impressed in Canada’s opening game of the 2024 Copa América.
Transfer-news journalist Fabrizio Romano says Lyon have tabled a bid for Bombito and have already agreed personal terms with the player.
Drafted by Colorado at the end of 2022, Bombito has made 27 MLS appearances for the Rapids since his league debut in May 2023. He has been a senior Canada international since June 2023.
Bombito suffers abuse after impressing for Canada
Although the Canadians were beaten 2-0 by defending champions Argentina in their Copa América opener on Thursday, Bombito earned praised for his display against the World Cup winners.
However, the 24-year-old was subjected to a barrage of online racist abuse over a heavy tackle on Argentina captain Lionel Messi.
In a statement on Friday, Canada Soccer described the abuse received by Bombito as “disturbing”, adding: “Racism has no place in our sport.” The governing body added: “Canada Soccer has been working in close collaboration with CONCACAF, CONMEBOL, and FIFA to address the issue.”
CONMEBOL, which organises the Copa América, issued a statement condemning “intolerant attitudes hidden behind behind accounts on social-media platforms”.
When is Canada’s next Copa América match?
Canada play their second group-stage game at the Copa América against Peru today. Kick-off at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City is scheduled for 6pm ET/3pm PT.
