Will Jose Mourinho get a UEFA punishment? Roma boss confronts Anthony Taylor after Europa League final

UEFA will wait to read the report from match referee Anthony Taylor before deciding whether Jose Mourinho will face punishment for his behaviour during and after Wednesday’s Europa League final.

The Roma boss lost the first European final of this decades-long managerial career, losing on penalties to Sevilla after a fiercely-fought game at the Puskas Stadium Budapest. Mourinho was given a yellow card during the game, along with seven other Roma players.

After the game he was filmed shouting at Anthony Taylor and other match officials in the car park.

“It’s a f*****g disgrace, a f*****g disgrace man,” Mourinho yelled.

During the game Sevilla were awarded a penalty by Taylor, which was then overturned after a VAR check. Then, in extra time, Sevilla midfielder Eric Lamela escaped a second yellow after a collision with Pablo Ibanez, which left the Roma player with a bloodied lip. Lamela went on to score his penalty in the shoot-out as Sevilla claimed a seventh Europa League title.

What will Mourinho’s punishment be?

The Special One is not know for taking defeat well but Wednesday’s outbursts exceeded even his volatile reputation. Mourinho was booked during the game for his protestations after the Lamela incident and had to be physically held back by members of his coaching team.

Mourinho was clearly incensed after the final whistle, as evidence by his confrontation with the match officials in the car park. This will almost certainly land him in hot water with UEFA.

However just as damaging, perhaps, were comments that Mourinho made to the Italian media after the game.

He said: “It was an intense, masculine, vibrant game with a referee who seemed Spanish. It was yellow, yellow, yellow all the time. The injustice is shown by the fact Lamela should’ve had a second yellow, he didn’t, and he converted a penalty in the shoot-out.”

The implication that Taylor, an English Premier League referee, was favouring the Spanish side could see him accused of questioning the official’s impartiality.

So what might Mourinho’s punishment be? Although it took place in a different competition, so the sentencing guidelines will differ slight, a similar incident occurred with former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger in 2018.

Wenger confronted Premier League referee Mike Dean after a game to accuse him of being “not honest” and “a disgrace”. Sound familiar?

On that occasion the Frenchman was given a four-game touchline ban and a £40,000 fine by an independent disciplinary panel.

Regardless of the impending UEFA punishment, Mourinho is guaranteed to miss his sides final Serie A game of the season after picking up five bookings during the course of the league campaign.
