What did José Mourinho say in his car park attack on the referees after Roma’s Europa League loss to Sevilla?
Mourinho lost a European final for the first time as the LaLiga side continued their incredible run in the competition.
José Mourinho’s European final winning streak is over and the Roma boss is far from happy about it. The Serie A side were somewhat inevitably beaten by Europa League specialists Sevilla in a penalty shootout at the Púskas Aréna in Budapest on Wednesday, the first time the Portuguese has tasted defeat at the final hurdle having previously won five continental trophies.

Gonzalo Montiel, who ironically scored the winner in the 2022 World Cup final shootout for Argentina against France, was again the man who sealed the victory from 12 yards, scoring at the second time of asking after Roma goalkeeper Rui Patricio was adjudged to have moved off his line. One of several moments of controversy, although seemingly not the main one that left Mourinho furious post-match.

Mourinho’s touchline antics
The Roma coach and his backroom team were visibly agitated on the touchline from the first whistle, with the Portuguese spending much of the 120 minutes outside his designated technical area. Mourinho was incensed with English referee Anthony Taylor for awarding the Spaniards a penalty, which was then overturned, in the second half and, moments later, couldn’t believe his eyes when his own team weren’t awarded a spot-kick for a possible handball in the penalty box by Sevilla’s Fernando. Taylor ruled that the Brazilian’s hand had been down by his side.
Roma unhappy with Lamela decision
And speaking to Spanish broadcaster Movistar+ and Italian counterparts Sky Italia after the game, he revealed his outrage that the Spaniards hadn’t been reduced to 10 men.
“We’re going home dead because of an injustice. I thought the referee was Spanish, there were so many yellow cards. Then he should’ve shown Lamela a second yellow card, which he didn’t. And he scored one of the penalties in the shootout. It’s an injustice”.

Mourinho’s Puskás Aréna car park attack
And the Roma boss wasn’t done there. Far from it. Footage emerged of him approaching the match officials in the Puskás Aréna car park, where he let them know what he really thought of their performance using a series of expletives in both English and Italian. “F*cking disgrace” and “f*cking farce” were captured on camera, with Spaniard radio station Cadena Sur assuring he threw in a “f*cking UEFA” for good measure.
13 players were shown yellow cards, including three substitutes, as was Mourinho. BBC Sport claimed that Taylor and fourth official Michael Oliver “deserved their post-match medals”. The Portuguese, as he has done in the past with runners-up medals, threw his to a young fan in the crowd.
