Will Mexico international Alexis Vega sign for Cruz Azul from Chivas?
La Máquina had appeared favourites to sign Vega, who has now received a formal offer from a club in Turkey.
Alexis Vega’s future remains up in the air, although his departure from Guadalajara appears to be imminent, with the Mexico international seemingly not in new head coach Fernando Gago’s plans. The winger was, of course, also suspended by the club during the Liga MX Apertura 2023 due to off-field disciplinary issues. There are a number of interested parties, including Cruz Azul, although Vega could be about to move to Europe for the first time in his career.
Unnamed Turkish club make formal bid for Vega
According to Fox Sports journalist Fernando Cevallos, posting on X, Chivas have received a formal offer from an unnamed club in Turkey, potentially a major spanner in the works for La Máquina, who had hoped to get a deal done soon. The new few hours will be crucial in determining the 26-year-old’s future.
Why was the forward suspended by Chivas?
Vega, who was part of the Mexico team that won a bronze medal at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021 and also went to the 2022 World Cup, missed five games in October and November after he and Cristian Calderón, as well as youth-team player Raúl Martínez, were banished from the first-team squad after reportedly sneaking women into the team hotel following Chivas’ 1-1 Liga MX draw away to Toluca on 1 October.
The attacker eventually returned for the final game of the league phase against Pumas and also featured in both liguilla quarter-final matches against the same opponent. Guadalajara lost the tie 3-1 on aggregate, which saw Veljko Paunovic lose his job as coach. Vega scored once in 10 appearances in Apertura 2023 and 28 times in 147 games for Chivas after joining in December 2018.
