Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer will be out for the rest of the season after breaking his leg while on a skiing tour.

The 36-year-old represented Germany at the World Cup in Qatar and was trying to “clear his mind” following a heartbreaking group stage exit.

Neuer took to social media to announce that he underwent surgery on the fracture and will be out for the remainder of 2022-23 season.

In a statement, he said: “Hey guys, what can I say, the end of the year could have definitely gone better.

“While I was trying to get my head clear while ski touring, I suffered a lower leg fracture.

Yesterday’s surgery went well. Many thanks to the doctors! However, it hurts to know that the current season is over for me.

“Take care! Your Manuel.”

Will Neuer make it in time for the Champions League?

News of Neuer’s injury is certainly a blow for Bayern, who have relied on the goalkeeper as one of their key players over the past decade.

FC Bayern will play their first leg away to PSG (Paris Saint-Germain) on February 14, with the second leg taking place at the Allianz Arena on March 8.

Based on Neuer’s statement, he will not recover in time for the Champions League game.

Neuer has had 488 appearances in total for Bayern since 2011, and captains both Bundesliga club Bayern Munich and the Germany national team.

Bayern returns to action in the Bundesliga against RB Leipzig on January 20.
