World Cup winning coach Scaloni signs with Argentina until 2026

Lionel Scaloni has renewed his contract with Argentina on a deal until 2026. The official account of the Argentina national team announced the news on Monday - hours before the winners of The Best Awards - that they are counting on the World Cup winning coach at least until the end of the next edition of the World Cup.

Since the Albiceleste won their third World Cup, everything seemed quite favourable for a renewal. Scaloni arrived at the senior national team in an interim capacity, but his brilliant work and management of the dressing room were key to Chiqui Tapia giving him a long-term role with his country.

Tapia’s Tweet after the renewal

Tapia is the President of the Argentine Football Association, the man who was also one of the Albiceleste’s historic players, and he posted a tweet with a nice message for Scaloni: “When confidence is high, communication is simple and effective. We continue to strengthen the national team project, together with Lionel Scaloni, the world champion coach,” the message read.

Scaloni’s path to contract extension with Argentina

In 2021 - a year that was difficult for the world of football - Scaloni was the orchestra director of a generation that struggled for several years before becoming world champions.

After winning the Copa America, Scaloni was given the chance to continue as Argentina coach in a period where he achieved a historic unbeaten record - 36 matches unbeaten - a record that was just one behind the record still held by Italy.

The World Cup winning coach can also boast of being the first and only champion so far of the Finalissima, a tournament that will be played for the first time in 2022, pitting the Euro and Copa America champions against each other. Now, Scaloni has the enormous challenge of becoming only the second coach to win two consecutive World Cups, the first since 1938.
