"At least she dumped me for Messi" - Antonella Roccuzzo's ex
While it’s generally believed that they were childhood sweethearts, Leo Messi’s wife was involved in another relationship with another boy for a while.
It is generally believed that Leo Messi and Antonella Roccuzzo have been together since they were teenagers, but one of the bride’s friends revealed that Mrs Messi was involved in another relationship for a period of time before the couple became romantically involved.
Messi and Antonella: together for a decade
One of Antonella’s friends told Para Ti magazine that, although the couple had known each other since they were 10 years old, their relationship only began to develop seriously in 2007.
Roccuzzo met up with her friends to celebrate Friendship Day (El Día del Amigo) on 20 July, and that was when they discovered she and Leo were dating.
“We met as we always had done and she took out a Blackberry phone that Leo had given her. She didn’t say anything else, but we all guessed that they had started seeing each other,” Antonella’s friend explained.
“One day we will be boyfriend and girlfriend”
Messi and Antonella had known each other since childhood, after being introduced by Luca Scaglia, Antonella’s cousin. “Who’s that?” a nine-year-old Messi asked, according to Luca’s recollection. Leo later wrote a letter to the eight-year-old Antonella in which he predicted: “One day we will be boyfriend and girlfriend.”
A couple of years later, Leo and his family moved from Rosario to Spain so that he could continue his career at FC Barcelona, and his relationship with Antonella became platonic. During that time, Antonella began dating another boy.
However, several years later, Antonella ended that relationship after finding out that Messi was returning to Argentina. According to her friend, she broke up with her partner and went in search of Leo.
Antonella’s ex handled the heartbreak with a philosophical attitude: “She dumped me, but at least she didn’t leave me for just anyone. She dumped me for Messi...” he told a local newspaper when recalling the relationship in 2010.
