Austria survives Jordan scare to open World Cup with crucial win

The Europeans were pushed far harder than expected, but late drama ensured they began their campaign with three valuable points.

Austria and David Alaba executed the plan in their World Cup opener against Jordan. The Europeans lived up to expectations and took the first step in their pursuit of Lionel Messi’s Argentina at the top of Group D. It was not nearly as straightforward as many had predicted. Jordan refused to back down and caused problems throughout. Romano Schmid gave Austria the lead, Mahmoud Al-Mardi Olwan equalized, and only a late own goal followed by a stoppage-time penalty finally secured the victory. Mission accomplished for Austria.

A picturesque setting in the San Francisco Bay Area welcomed an Austrian team returning to the World Cup spotlight after more than two decades away and facing tournament underdogs Jordan. On paper, the gap between the sides appeared enormous. Jordan arrived with just one player based in European soccer – Rennes forward Mousa Al-Tamari. Across the field stood established names such as David Alaba, Konrad Laimer and Marcel Sabitzer, guided by veteran German coach Ralf Rangnick.

Austria dominated possession from the opening whistle, but it was Jordan that created the first real danger. Twenty-year-old Al Odeh Fakhouri was the first player to seriously test the Austrian goalkeeper, providing an early warning.

Austria responded immediately. Schmid unleashed a powerful strike from the edge of the box that left goalkeeper Yazid Abulaila with no chance. The shot flew into the top-right corner and sparked celebrations among the Austrian supporters. Jordan answered with an Olwan effort that rattled the crossbar. The Al-Sailiya attacker remained a constant threat, combining effectively with Al-Tamari and forcing Austria into several uncomfortable moments.

Jordan looked dangerous on every counterattack, and the breakthrough finally arrived after halftime as Austria emerged sluggish and unfocused. Once again, Olwan was at the heart of it, producing a brilliant move before curling a precise finish into the far corner. The underdogs suddenly sensed an upset. Shortly afterward, Alaba left the field. It was not the World Cup debut the captain had envisioned, but Austria’s priority remained securing the win.

The game became increasingly open, with chances at both ends. Austria carried the greater threat in the final third. Veteran striker Marko Arnautovic thought he had restored the lead, only for his goal to be ruled out for handball. Relief eventually arrived when defender Yazan Al Arab inadvertently turned a cross into his own net. Then, deep into stoppage time, Arnautovic converted from the penalty spot to seal the result.

Austria escaped with all three points. It was far from the perfect performance, but it was enough to keep pace in the group standings. For Alaba, Laimer and company, the World Cup dream remains firmly on course.
