Barcelona just got a reminder of why Julián Álvarez won’t come cheap
Álvarez’s extra-time strike against Switzerland revived his World Cup after a difficult spell, with Barça still unable to match Atlético Madrid’s valuation.
Julián Álvarez finally arrived when Argentina needed him most.
The Atlético Madrid striker scored one of the goals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Argentina’s quarterfinal win over Switzerland. It was the game winner in extra time, a stunning strike that could end up defining his tournament. It also served as a reminder of why Atlético reportedly values him at around $175 million. Any club hoping to pry him away now knows exactly what it will take.
His roar during the celebration said everything.
“It was a huge release,” Álvarez said after the match. “We knew it was going to be a difficult game. Even when we had an extra player for stretches, it wasn’t easy, but the important thing is that we won. People always talk about social media, but we’re focused on ourselves. You have to know how to suffer because every World Cup game is like this. Lionel Messi is a monster, the greatest in history. There aren’t enough words to describe him. We have two games left, and we’re going to give everything.”
Álvarez finally finds his rhythm
After beginning the tournament hampered by an injury and lingering ankle discomfort, Álvarez gradually worked his way into the starting lineup. Even after earning a regular spot, though, he struggled to look like himself.
The goals weren’t coming, and he never seemed fully comfortable.
Things became even more complicated after his comments following Argentina’s opening game, when he suggested that “the best thing for everyone is to look for a transfer,” a remark widely interpreted as referring to a possible departure from Atlético Madrid.
Why Europe’s biggest clubs want Julián Álvarez
That put Alvarez squarely in the spotlight.
So did his enormous price tag.
But “La Araña” possesses a quality that separates him from almost every other striker in world soccer. It’s the reason Atlético Madrid is determined to keep him, and why Barcelona continues to be linked with a move. Few players have his ability to decide games in an instant and score goals that seem almost impossible.
There is little debate about his talent in Argentina. There shouldn’t be much debate in Europe, either.
Players capable of moments like this are exceptionally rare.
