Update:

As Mexico prepare to co-host the men’s World Cup this summer, reports say Cruz Azul midfielder Carlos Rodríguez won’t be part of El Tri’s squad for the tournament.

“Charly” to miss out for Mexico?

According to information from Gibran Araige, Mexico head coach Javier Aguirre is still deciding which players will ultimately be left off his roster, with “Charly” Rodríguez reportedly among those set to be cut.

Over the last 11 matches played by the Mexican national team, Rodríguez was called up nine times, started seven of those games, and remained on the bench in just two (against Ecuador and Belgium).

Since making his senior debut for Mexico in 2019, the 29-year-old has been capped 68 times.

Heave-ho for Heron?

Likewise, per the same reporting from Araige, Germán Berterame is another player in line to be sacrificed by the Mexico boss, even though the striker was also part of Aguirre’s ongoing process.

The former Monterrey forward left Mexico during the winter transfer window to play for Inter Miami, a move that reduced his chances of making Aguirre’s final World Cup squad this summer.

Berterame has appeared in 10 matches for Miami this season, scoring just three goals for the Major League Soccer club.

Should Berterame officially be left off the roster, the Mexican forwards headed to the World Cup are likely to be Raúl Jiménez, Armando González and Julián Quiñones.
