Update:

There is little ambiguity in how Kasey Keller views the current United States setup. The progress is real, the expectations are higher, and the margin for error is shrinking fast. Speaking in a wide-ranging interview, Keller touched on everything from Mauricio Pochettino’s future to the role of Christian Pulisic and the unpredictable nature of a home World Cup.

Pochettino’s focus is on the present, not Spurs

Keller acknowledged the inevitable noise linking Pochettino with a return to Tottenham, but framed it as a question of timing rather than likelihood. “I definitely see him quitting after the World Cup,” Keller said to Jackpot City Casino.

For the U.S., the implication is straightforward. Pochettino’s focus remains on the World Cup, and that is where the story sits for now, especially as the London club continues its fight for Premier League survival.

Pulisic has the talent for Real Madrid

Keller did not hesitate when asked about Pulisic’s level. “Do I think Christian Pulisic is good enough to replace Mohamed Salah at Liverpool or play for Barcelona or Real Madrid? I do. Talent wise, 100%.”

But he quickly added a layer that goes beyond ability. “The problem is when you get to a Barça, Madrid or Liverpool, do you get the benefit of doubt that every player needs when things don’t go quite the way everyone hopes they should go?” Keller pointed to Pulisic’s current situation at AC Milan as a positive contrast, describing him as “a marquee player for a big club… it’s still a great historical club.”

He also left open the idea of unfinished business in England. “Could I see something similar with Christian, 100%,” he said, referencing players who returned to the Premier League and thrived after early setbacks.

USMNT progress is visible, but so are the limits

On the national team itself, Keller believes Pochettino has gradually found his core group after early experimentation. “It’s a squad Mauricio Pochettino took some time to figure out… and then you saw over the last several camps that it has come right back down to where you thought it was going to be from day one and the results have followed.”

Turning that into a deep World Cup run, however, requires more than structure. “You need your stars to perform, you need your role players to do their role and then you need a handful of surprises,” Keller explained. He also stressed the role of fortune in tournament football. “You need luck too… maybe you need just one of those crazy games where your goalkeeper has a great game.”

The World Cup minimum for USMNT

Keller was most direct when discussing expectations. “With three teams getting out of the group… if the US doesn’t get out that would be a disaster.” That judgment reflects a shift from previous cycles, when difficult draws made progression uncertain. This time, the path is more forgiving, even if the ceiling remains unclear. “We need to be realistic on who we are and where we are,” he added.

The upcoming friendlies carry more weight than usual, even with Cristiano Ronaldo absent from one of them. “These kind of are the last friendlies to impress… this is where you need to solidify your squad,” Keller said.

At the same time, he suggested Pochettino may still be exploring options within a largely settled group. “I am still wondering about the line-ups… if it’s still that last opportunity to have a look at different things.”

Ronaldo, Messi and what comes next

Keller also offered a view of Cristiano’s situation. “I think he is really one injury away from retiring honestly,” he said, casting doubt on any late-career move to MLS. “I don’t know if he wants to go into an MLS system at 41 or 42… just for what.”

Instead, Keller sees other avenues, including media projects. “Could Cristiano Ronaldo make a Netflix documentary… he definitely could do that,” he said, pointing to the forward’s global profile.

When it comes to Lionel Messi, Keller expects a different path. “I can see Messi doing some work with the team in Argentina and staying in Miami, doing stuff,” he said, suggesting a quieter post-playing role.

Keller’s assessment ultimately lands on a simple point. The United States is better prepared than before, but preparation alone will not define the summer. Execution will.
