The Netherlands kick off their World Cup 2026 campaign on Sunday when they face Japan at 4 p.m. ET in Group F. Ronald Koeman’s side will also face Sweden and Tunisia as they attempt to reach the knockout rounds.

Since when has Koeman been in charge of the Netherlands?

Koeman has been in charge of the Dutch national team since Jan. 23, 2023, the start of his second spell as head coach. Before becoming one of Europe’s most recognizable managers, he enjoyed an outstanding playing career, winning the European Cup with PSV and Barcelona, scoring the winning goal in Barcelona’s first European Cup triumph in 1992, and helping the Netherlands win Euro 1988.

His coaching journey began after retirement as an assistant with the Netherlands and Barcelona before landing his first managerial role at Vitesse in 2000. A year later he took over at Ajax, where he won a domestic double in 2001-02 and added another Eredivisie title in 2003-04. During his time in Amsterdam, future stars such as Zlatan Ibrahimović, Wesley Sneijder and Rafael van der Vaart emerged.

Koeman’s glittering managerial CV

Koeman then moved abroad, taking charge of Benfica and later PSV. At Benfica, he reached the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals, eliminating Manchester United and Liverpool along the way. He repeated the feat at PSV, winning the Eredivisie title in 2006-07 and guiding the Dutch club to another Champions League quarterfinal.

His résumé also includes spells at Valencia, where he won the Copa del Rey in 2008, and Feyenoord, where he became the first man to play for and manage Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord. He later moved to the Premier League, taking Southampton to its highest-ever Premier League finish and then leading Everton into European competition.

Koeman in charge of the Netherlands

Koeman’s first stint as Netherlands manager began in 2018. He led the Dutch to the final of the inaugural UEFA Nations League before leaving for Barcelona in 2020. At Camp Nou, he won the Copa del Rey in 2021 before returning to the national team for a second spell. His biggest achievement since returning came at Euro 2024, when the Netherlands reached the semifinals of a major tournament for the first time since the 2014 World Cup.

Now Koeman hopes to add another chapter to an already impressive career by leading the Dutch deep into World Cup 2026.
