Update:

Germany entered its opening Group E match against Curaçao as overwhelming favorites. The four-time world champions came into the tournament ranked 10th in the FIFA World Ranking, while Curaçao sat 82nd. The Dutch-speaking island nation is also the smallest country ever to compete at a World Cup in both population and land area.

When Felix Nmecha gave Germany the lead in the fifth minute, the match appeared to be heading exactly where most observers expected.

Curaçao’s Comenencia though had other ideas.

His equalizer arrived in the 20th minute after Curaçao put together only its second real attacking moves of the match. Hansen burst into the penalty area but saw the ball poked away before he could get a shot off. The loose ball then fell to Jürgen Locadia, whose effort was blocked by the German defense.

But Germany failed to fully clear the danger and the rebound dropped invitingly for Comenencia, who fired a left-footed strike beyond Manuel Neuer and into the net, stunning the crowd and bringing Curaçao level with the four-time World Cup champions.

For a nation many expected to struggle at its first World Cup, it was a moment that will live long in Curaçao soccer history.

Who is Comenencia?

The 21-year-old currently plays for Swiss Super League side Zürich. Born in the Netherlands, Comenencia came through PSV Eindhoven’s academy and was regarded as one of the game’s brightest young prospects, earning a place on The Guardian’s list of the 60 best talents born in 2004.

After signing a professional contract with PSV, he later moved to Juventus Next Gen before joining Zürich in 2025.

Internationally, Comenencia represented the Netherlands at youth level before switching allegiance to Curaçao. He accepted his first senior call-up in October 2024 and has quickly become an important figure for the national team.

Curaçao’s World Cup journey is already historic. The team was drawn into Group E alongside Germany, Ecuador and Ivory Coast, and many expected it to struggle against some of the tournament’s bigger names.

Instead, thanks to Comenencia’s goal, Curaçao showed it belongs on soccer’s biggest stage.
