Haaland is a beast

Haaland wasn’t about to be outdone on a historic World Cup day, matching Messi and Mbappé with another brace. The Norwegian now has four goals in the tournament, despite missing a couple of clear-cut chances before finally converting. Norway will now fight for the top spot in the group against France, proving they are a side to be reckoned with. Meanwhile, a highly disappointing and chaotic Senegal is left on the ropes.

The match began with a Norwegian onslaught that completely overwhelmed their opponents early on. Following a flurry of consecutive corners, Mendy produced an incredible point-blank save to deny Ajer. Senegal gradually grew into the game—at least enough to clear the immediate danger—as the match entered a frustrating phase filled with misplaced passes and breaking attacks from both sides.

Once the half-hour mark passed, spaces opened up and Nordic power prevailed—partly thanks to some defensive gifts. Ødegaard had a clear sight of goal after a header down from Haaland, forcing Mendy to stand tall once again. Moments later, however, the veteran Koulibaly made a childish error. He gifted possession to Pedersen, and the forward made no mistake, firing home a fierce strike.

Norway refused to take their foot off the gas after the opener and could have doubled their lead before the break through Haaland. Mendy dithered on the ball, allowing the striker to dispossess him, but Haaland’s shot toward an empty net rattled the woodwork. Early in the second half, the City forward connected with a superb header, but the keeper redeemed himself with a phenomenal diving save.

Deadly Duo

Right after the interval, Norway’s two talismanic stars combined to double the advantage. Ødegaard threaded a surgical pass into the box, which Haaland expertly finished with his left foot. After a frustrating first half, the star striker registered his third goal of the tournament.

Senegal refused to fold and found an immediate response. Capitalizing on a gap in the Norwegian defense, Sarr cut through the middle and finished with relative ease to reduce the deficit. However, this was Haaland’s night. Just five minutes later, he completed his brace with a clinical first-time strike in the area, this time using his right foot.

From there, Norway focused on managing the game and protecting the scoreline, while still threatening to extend it on the counter-attack. Yet, it was Sarr who struck again, showing great composure inside the box to add some late drama to stoppage time. Ultimately, it wasn’t enough, and Senegal fell just short of snatching a point.
