Inside Mexico City’s bold fan plans for the 2026 World Cup

Mexico City will host the FIFA World Cup for a third time, becoming the only city in the world to hold that distinction. As a result, the capital is gearing up to offer soccer fans entertainment throughout the tournament, beginning with the Fan Fest and continuing with a series of concerts at the Auditorio Nacional.

Estadio Ciudad de México will be ready

Félix Aguirre, director of Estadio Ciudad de México, said the home of the Mexican national team will be ready by June 11. He also outlined the scale of the work carried out at the country’s most important stadium.

Following a complex renovation process that has involved more than 1,939,000 hours of labor, 35,000 cubic meters (about 45,800 cubic yards) of excavation, 9,500 square meters (approximately 102,000 square feet) of stitched and seeded hybrid turf, and up to 1,780 workers per day, officials provided an update during a presentation held at the Kaluz Museum in the heart of Mexico City.

Alejandra Frausto, Mexico City’s tourism secretary, stressed that the capital is not a three-time World Cup host, but a four-time one. She recalled the Women’s World Cup staged in Mexico in 1971, when the national team finished second after facing Denmark in the final. A crowd of 110,000 attended that match, setting the record for the highest attendance at Estadio Ciudad de México.

A unique Fan Fest in Mexico City

The festival will be located in the iconic Zócalo beginning June 11 and running through July 19. Organizers expect as many as 2.2 million fans to attend free public broadcasts of World Cup games.

To ensure a top-tier experience, the FIFA Fan Festival will feature a 510-square-meter (about 5,490-square-foot) LED screen – the largest of any Fan Festival across the three host countries – along with a state-of-the-art sound system.

Concerts at the Auditorio Nacional

Host City Mexico City also announced México Vibra, a series of concerts headlined by Alejandro Fernández and Carín León on June 9 and 10, serving as a prelude to the World Cup at the iconic Auditorio Nacional.

Performers will include artists representing different genres and generations of Mexican music, such as Emmanuel, Mijares, Lucero, Banda El Recodo, Carla Morrison and Timbiriche, among many others.
