Jude Bellingham reveals what he really said to Lionel Messi during heated World Cup clash
The England star explained the on-field argument, then praised Messi and delivered an emotional message after England’s painful defeat.
England midfielder Jude Bellingham has revealed what sparked his heated first-half exchange with Lionel Messi during the Three Lions’ World Cup showdown with Argentina, insisting the confrontation was far less dramatic than many fans might assume.
According to Bellingham, the brief argument stemmed from a foul that had just been awarded to Argentina.
“We were really just discussing a foul, actually” Bellingham said. “It wasn’t anything bad. I’m sure everyone will do their thing and make it a big deal, but it was nothing.”
What Bellingham and Messi argued about
The Real Madrid star went on to explain exactly what was said between the two players during the tense moment.
“I thought there had been a foul earlier,” Bellingham said. “He said, ‘What about the one on me?’ And I was saying, ‘You’re strong enough to take it.’ You know what I mean?”
While the exchange caught plenty of attention during the match, Bellingham made it clear there was no bad blood between the two superstars.
Bellingham praises Messi after England heartbreak
Despite the disappointment of England’s defeat, Bellingham spoke respectfully about Messi’s influence on the game and what it meant to share the field with one of soccer’s all-time greats.
“Obviously, I’m on the losing side, which hurts a lot,” he said. “But it’s a privilege to play against him.”
The 22-year-old ended with an emotional message, acknowledging both England’s painful exit and the frustration of another missed opportunity.
“It’s heartbreaking,” Bellingham said. “I wanted to be part of the England team that finally got it done. Standing here telling the fans the same things they’ve probably heard for years and years is really heartbreaking. I’m sorry.”
