World Cup 2026

Lamine Yamal makes Julián Álvarez plea

The national team star gave an interview to El Larguero in which he commented on the World Cup, his injury, and the tournament’s surprises.

Update:

Lamine Yamal gave an interview to El Larguero on Spanish radio, where he analysed the national team’s current situation at the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada. The Spanish star discussed a range of topics in a preview of the interview published by the programme on social media:

Does the World Cup start now? “For me, yes. In the group stage, now that three teams advance, you have to play well and get through, but this is where the important part begins.”

What surprised you the most? Paraguay, Morocco...? “Paraguay surprised me the most. For the Netherlands–Morocco match, I had a bet with my friends that Morocco would win. I predicted a 2–2 draw and that they would win on penalties.”

Brazil struggled against Japan: “Japan seemed like a good team to me, but Brazil were superior. And Paraguay surprised me a lot.”

What personal experience are you taking from this World Cup? “I’m learning. International football is different from club football. I’m learning, gaining experience and learning how to come back from an injury.”

And how are you dealing with the injury? “On the day of the Cape Verde match, the ball looked like a marble to me. Now I see it better, more normally. I lacked rhythm and fitness in my body, but I feel good and I’m looking forward to Thursday.”

One of this summer’s big transfer sagas is Julián Álvarez. Would you like to play with him at Barça? “Right now, I’m not thinking too much about it, but I hope so because he’s a great player. If he comes, we’ll welcome him with open arms because he’ll be joining the best club in the world, the best fans in the world and, for me, the best city in the world. If I were him, I would come. We’ll be waiting if he wants to join. Go for it.”
