Argentina were leading Switzerland when Portuguese referee João Pinheiro made a decision that did not sit well with Lionel Messi. The Argentina captain immediately approached the official, leading to a brief exchange that, according to TyC Sports and based on footage and lip-reading analysis, saw the No. 10 tell him: “Talk to me with respect. Don’t be disrespectful. I’ve spoken to you respectfully.”

The moment was another example of how tense the match became, with Switzerland eventually finishing with 10 players after the controversial sending-off of Breel Embolo. It also highlighted the influence Messi continues to have on the field, both with teammates and opponents.

Now, the Argentina star is preparing for a historic semifinal matchup against England, one of the few national teams he has never faced during his legendary career.

Messi set for first-ever meeting with England

Facing England is special because they’re one of the world’s top teams, and matches against teams like that are always different,” Messi said.

“Personally, it’ll be my first time playing against them. I’ve faced just about everyone else, but never England, so that’s something I’m really looking forward to as well.”

The semifinal will add another unique chapter to Messi’s international career. Despite making his Argentina debut in 2005 and facing many of the world’s biggest soccer nations, England is one of the few major opponents missing from his list of previous encounters.

Messi celebrates Argentina’s return to final four

Following Argentina’s hard-fought victory, Messi also shared his emotions on Instagram, celebrating the team’s resilience after another difficult match.

We suffered again, but this team never stops believing,” Messi wrote. “We are back among the four best teams in the world! Let’s go, damn it!”

The message reflected the mood inside the Argentina camp after another demanding knockout game. The defending champions have once again reached the World Cup semifinals, with Messi now preparing for a matchup that will be unlike any other he has experienced at international level.
