When was the last time that all four World Cup semifinalists were the top four in FIFA’s rankings?
The 2026 World Cup has produced a semifinal lineup packed with giants, but just how unusual is it to have the top 4?

Don’t you sometimes look at the FIFA World Ranking and think that it feels like little more than a mildy interesting talking point? Every international break sparks another debate over whether the system really reflects who the best teams are. Given the regional matchups, it’s not exactly comparing global apples with apples.
This time, though, the rankings have been remarkably accurate.
Which teams are in 2026 World Cup semifinals?
After the quarterfinals, the four teams left standing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup are Argentina, France, Spain and England. Not only are they all former world champions – remember there’s only ever been eight of them – they also occupy the top four places in FIFA’s latest men’s world rankings.
That raises an obvious question: has this ever happened before?

When did the top four ranked nations complete the World Cup semifinals?
The answer is never.
Since FIFA introduced its official men’s world rankings in December 1992, no previous World Cup has produced a semifinal lineup made up exclusively of the four highest-ranked nations.
That makes the 2026 tournament the first edition in ranking-era history to achieve the feat.
It could be seen as even more remarkable considering this is the first 48-team World Cup. An expanded field meant an extra knockout round, more matches and, in theory, more opportunities for shocks. Instead, the tournament has gradually filtered out almost everyone except the established heavyweights.

Who are the world’s top four ranked teams?
Heading into the semifinals, FIFA’s top four are:
- France
- Argentina
- Spain
- England
All four were lined up in the bracket so that, assuming they won their group, they would not face each other until this stage. Argentina are the reigning world champions, France are chasing a third title, Spain are looking for a second crown to follow that of 2010, while England are still pursuing only the second World Cup in their history, with 60 years having past since then.
Has any previous World Cup come close?
Several have, but none completed the set.
In recent tournaments there has almost always been at least one relative surprise semifinalist. Croatia reached the last four in 1998, 2018 and 2022. Turkey stunned the world in 2002. Uruguay did the same in 2010, while Morocco became the first African nation to reach a World Cup semifinal in 2022.
Those Cinderella runs prevented the rankings’ top four from ever appearing together. Sometimes paths would cross earlier in the knockout rounds.
The 2026 edition is different. Every remaining team entered the tournament with eyes on winning it and, while some have ridden their luck somewhat – looking at you England and Argentina – they can now almost touch it.
