Update:

Mexico will take on England in the World Cup round of 16 on Sunday, one of the most highly-anticipated El Tri fixtures for decades.

Playing their final game on home soil this tournament, Mexico will fancy their chances of knocking out the European giants after a stunning run to this point. Mexico have won all four of their World Cup 2026 games so far, leading them to the fifth game for the first time since 1986.

There is an incredible sense of optimism around the team but head coach Javier Aguirre has some big decisions to make for the England clash. Young star Gilberto Mora came into the starting XI for the round of 32 win over Ecuador and Aguirre continues with the 17-year-old against England Here’s how El Tri line up...

Mexico confirmed starting XI

After four wins from four Aguirre will be reluctant to make any changes against England. Mora proved his quality in the group stage win over Czechia and looks set to retain his place against the Three Lions.

Mexico confirmed team: Rangel; Sanchez, Montes, Vasquez, Gallardo; Mora, Lira, Romo; Alvarado, Jimenez, Quinones.

If Aguirre can lead Mexico through to the quarter-finals he will have secured one of the greatest triumphs in Mexican soccer history, beating an England side who were tipped as one of the pre-tournament favorites. Mexico have home advantage and a familiarity at altitude, and will be confident of pulling off an upset on Sunday night.
