Mexico vs Portugal: How to watch today’s friendly match played at Estadio Azteca
As the teams prepare for the 2026 World Cup, the Mexicans host the Portuguese in Mexico City friendly tonight.

World Cup co-hosts Mexico welcome Portugal to the Estadio Azteca for a tournament tune-up tonight, in a game that marks the reopening of El Tri’s iconic home stadium.
An arena that has hosted two World Cup finals - in 1970 and 1986 - the Azteca closed in May 2024, to undergo a $150m revamp ahead of this summer’s finals.
Known for sponsorship reasons as the Estadio Banorte, the stadium will host five matches at the 2026 World Cup, including two Mexico group clashes and two games in the first two knockout stages.

Mexico vs Portugal: game preview
This will be Mexico and Portugal’s first meeting since a Confederations Cup double-header nearly a decade ago. In summer 2017, the nations drew 2-2 in the now-defunct tournament’s group stage, before goals by Pepe and Adrien Silva gave the Portuguese a 2-1 win in the third-place playoff.
Under Javier Aguirre, now in his third spell as Mexico boss, El Tri are gearing up for a World Cup in which they will bid to go beyond the last 16 for the first time since 1986 - the last occasion they hosted the finals. The Mexicans face South Africa at the Azteca in the World Cup’s opening game on Jun. 11, before further Group A games against South Korea on Jun. 18, and one of Czechia or Denmark on Jun. 24.
After facing Portugal tonight, Mexico host Belgium in a second Azteca friendly on Tuesday, Mar. 31.
Meanwhile, Portugal have travelled to North America without captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who has been left out of Roberto Martínez’s squad as he recovers from a hamstring injury. After taking on Mexico this weekend, the Seleção continue their World Cup preparations by taking on another co-host, the United States, in a friendly in Atlanta on Tuesday.
Drawn in Group K, the Portuguese play their first game of the 2026 World Cup on Jun. 17, against DR Congo or Jamaica. Martínez’s men then face group matches against Uzbekistan and Colombia, on Jun. 23 and 27, respectively.
World Cup semifinalists in 2006, Portugal were eliminated at the quarterfinal stage four years ago, losing to Morocco.
