Mexico’s next World Cup rival brings back a historic El Tri memory
Mexico will meet Czechia again in Group A, reviving the memory of the first World Cup win in El Tri’s history.

Mexico’s group for the 2026 World Cup is set. After Europe’s marathon playoff round, the Czech Republic punched its ticket to the tournament and moved into Group A alongside El Tri.
The historic qualification – the Czech team had not reached a World Cup in 20 years – brings with it a particularly sweet memory for Mexico, because the green-clad side will once again face the team it first defeated at a World Cup.
A pleasant memory for El Tri against the Czech Republic
Although it did not go by that name then – in fact, that European nation was much larger because it was still united – Mexico beat what was at the time a world powerhouse, Czechoslovakia.
June 7, 1962, became a historic date for Mexico, because after 13 failed attempts – 12 defeats and just one draw – the Aztec side produced a superb performance and beat the Czechs 3-1 with goals from Isidoro Díaz, Alfredo del Águila and Héctor Hernández.
Curiously, Czechoslovakia’s defeat did not change anything in the group, as it still advanced to the next round as runner-up and would later go all the way to the final, where it lost to Brazil.
A match that could define the future
Given the makeup of the group at the 2026 World Cup, Mexico and Czechia could meet again in another do-or-die situation, just as they did 64 years ago.
This time, Mexico and the Czechs will face off on Wednesday, June 24, at 9 p.m. ET at Mexico City Stadium, in a match that could decide the future of one – or both – teams.
