No World Cup for Luis Suárez: Inter Miami star dropped from Uruguay’s squad
Uruguay’s World Cup roster signals a changing of the guard as Marcelo Bielsa turns to a new generation.
Luis Suárez will not play at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Uruguay has announced its final 26-man squad for the tournament, marking the country’s first World Cup without several of the stars who defined its modern era. Suárez, Diego Godín, Edinson Cavani and other longtime leaders are absent as Marcelo Bielsa places his trust in a new generation led by Federico Valverde, Ronald Araújo and José María Giménez.
Why isn’t Luis Suárez going to the World Cup?
Suárez’s omission shouldn’t come as a major surprise. The Inter Miami striker retired from international duty following the 2024 Copa América and, although he made himself available for selection again earlier this year, he has not been called up by Bielsa, who has opted for younger attacking options.
The 39-year-old represented Uruguay at four World Cups (2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022), scoring seven goals across the tournaments and helping La Celeste reach the semifinals in South Africa in 2010.
While the legendary names are gone, Uruguay remains one of the most dangerous teams in Group H (alongside Spain, Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia) and arrives at the tournament with a talented blend of experience and emerging talent.
Darwin Núñez gets the nod
One of the biggest questions surrounding the squad was whether Darwin Núñez would make the final roster.
The Al Hilal striker’s situation had raised concerns after he was left off the club’s Saudi Pro League roster and managed just three appearances since February. Despite the lack of playing time, Bielsa and his coaching staff have chosen to rely on the 26-year-old’s proven track record with the national team and the experience he brings to the squad.
Uruguay will hope Núñez can quickly rediscover his rhythm before the tournament begins.
Injury concerns for key players
Another notable talking point is the inclusion of two important players who are still working their way back from long-term injuries.
Both Joaquín Piquerez and Giorgian De Arrascaeta have been named in the squad despite ongoing recovery processes. If they can return to full fitness in time, both are expected to play significant roles for La Celeste during the World Cup.
Their availability could prove crucial, particularly in the latter stages of the tournament.
Uruguay’s hopes rest on Valverde
Much of Uruguay’s potential to make a deep run will depend on the form of Valverde and the condition of De Arrascaeta.
Valverde enters the tournament as the undisputed face of the team and one of the world’s most complete midfielders. The Real Madrid star will be expected to drive Uruguay forward, contribute goals and provide leadership on and off the field.
De Arrascaeta, meanwhile, offers something different. The Flamengo playmaker remains the creative force capable of unlocking defenses and bringing Uruguay’s attack to life. When he is at his best, the entire team functions more smoothly around him.
Uruguay may no longer have the iconic figures who carried the nation through much of the last two decades, but Bielsa’s squad possesses quality throughout the roster. With Valverde leading the way and several key players returning to fitness, La Celeste believes it can once again challenge the world’s best on soccer’s biggest stage.
