The worst stadium at the 2026 World Cup? Everything you need to know about this venue that fans are not happy about
Less than 30 days remain before the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off in Canada, Mexico and the United States.
The countdown ahead of the 2026 World Cup is very much in the final stretch with excitement building towards the first tournament set to feature 48 teams and set to be staged across three countries.
However, as is generally the case pre World Cups, questions are being asked about a series of issues including inflated ticket pricing, additional travel and parking costs and how the competition will hold up in a group stage that will see just 16 teams eliminated from the first round.
A poll conducted by betting site Covers.com saw Canada’s https://www.fifa.com/en/tournaments/mens/worldcup/canadamexicousa2026/canada/toronto voted as the “worst” venue for the 2026 World Cup is primarily a result of its physical capacity and the controversial nature of its temporary renovations.
Even after a significant $158-million renovation, Toronto Stadium remains the smallest of the 16 host venues with a 45,736 capacity.
The “scaffolding” and safety concerns are another issue that has been highlighted and to meet the FIFA minimum capacity requirement of 40,000 seats, Toronto added roughly 17,000 temporary seats.
This has led to viral criticism on social media with many online photos of steep, “flimsy-looking” metal scaffolding structures sparking safety concerns among fans and critics have questioned whether these temporary stands can handle the jumping and stomping of thousands of passionate fans.
The playing surface has also come under fire with even Canada’s head coach Jesse Marsch calling for improvements to ensure the grass is “perfect” for the summer tournament.
