Inside Mexico’s World Cup push: Players rally around Guillermo Ochoa amid criticism
In a press conference ahead of the preparation matches, Erik Lira and Guillermo Martínez spoke about the figure that the 40-year-old goalkeeper represents.

From the Mexican National Team’s training center, preparations for the 2026 World Cup are in full swing. And during media availability, Erik Lira and Guillermo “Memote” Martínez opened up about the team’s mindset — including how the group is handling outside criticism and the ongoing debate surrounding veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa.
Ochoa, a longtime face of El Tri and a product of Club América’s academy, has been Mexico’s most recognizable figure for more than a decade. But at 41, his age and recent form have sparked debate among fans and commentators. Now playing for A.E.L. Limassol, he’s aiming for his sixth World Cup roster, and his teammates made it clear they’re firmly in his corner.

“Being around Ochoa is an honor and a privilege”
Erik Lira was the first to speak up. The Cruz Azul midfielder didn’t hesitate to defend the veteran: “Memo is uncomfortable for everyone — in a good way. For me, he’s a legend. I grew up watching the national team and Ochoa was always the goalkeeper. Being with him is a privilege and an honor. He’s the first one in the gym, the first one in the locker room. Sharing that with him is special.”
Pumas striker Guillermo “Memote” Martínez echoed that sentiment: “It’s incredible to share the field with him. You can feel how much this means to him. He’s someone the whole country should admire. What he’s achieved isn’t easy. Ochoa is world‑class — we all know it. Having someone with his stature is a huge positive.”
What’s next for Mexico — and for Ochoa?
Mexico has three tune‑up matches before the World Cup opener against South Africa on June 11:
- Mexico vs. Ghana — May 22
- Mexico vs. Australia — May 30
- Mexico vs. Serbia — June 4
Those games will also serve as Ochoa’s window to convince head coach Javier Aguirre that he deserves to be one of the three goalkeepers in his definitive roster.
With the World Cup on home soil, the stakes — and the scrutiny — are higher than ever. But inside the locker room, the message is clear: Ochoa still commands respect, and his teammates believe he remains a crucial piece of Mexico’s World Cup ambitions.
