Update:

Excitement continues to grow as the 2026 World Cup which will be staged in Mexico, Canada and the USA looms on the horizon.

The action gets underway in CDMX as Javier Aguirre’s Mexico face South Africa with the ‘Trionda’ matchball set to be a key feature of the 104 games as part of the expanded 48 team tournament.

Key features of the Trionda

The Adidas produced Trionda (Spanish for “three waves”) is the official match ball for the 2026 World Cup. Its design and engineering are heavily focused on managing the vastly different climates of the three host nations—Canada, Mexico, and the USA.

In a departure from the 20-panel “Al Rihla” used in 2022, the Trionda features only four fluid panels. The goal is to provide a larger, cleaner “strike zone” and more consistent touch. By using fewer panels but deeper, strategically placed seams, the ball is designed to provide high in-flight stability and prevent the unpredictable “knuckling” seen with older designs like the 2012 South Africa Jabulani.

The ball include a side-mounted chip and to maintain perfect balance, counterweights are placed in the other three panels to offset the weight of the chip. This cup sends real-time data to officials to assist with semi-automated offside technology and determining precise “touch” moments (e.g., for handballs or goal-line decisions).

In tests, experts suggest that the Trionda will have a more predictable, stable flight path during corner kicks and free kicks, rather than suddenly dipping or swerving erratically at mid-range speeds.

The design of the ball features a tricolor scheme of red (Canada), green (Mexico), and blue (USA).
