Update:

The 2026 FIFA World Cup has delivered a semifinal lineup that is both familiar and refreshing. Powerhouses Argentina, France, Spain, and England remain standing, while traditional giants such as Germany and Brazil are notably absent after early exits.

The team with the most history in this part of the tournament, in fact, is not a part of this year’s final four.

Which country has played the most times in World Cup semifinals?

For decades, Germany has set the benchmark for consistency at the World Cup. No nation has reached the semi-finals more often. Historically, they have made it that far an astonishing 12 times, the most of any country.

German libero Franz Beckenbauer is treated for a shoulder injury by German team doctor professor Schobert (left) and masseur Erich Deuser (top right) during the 1970 World Cup semifinal Germany against Italy at the Aztec Stadium in Mexico City, Mexico 17 June 1970. Germany lost the game 3-4 against Italy which was scored by Italian midfielder Rivera (not in frame) in the 111th minute. It’s a remarkable record built on sustained excellence across generations. From their dominance in the 1970s and 1980s to their 2014 title-winning run, Germany became synonymous with deep tournament runs. Even more impressively, they reached at least the quarter-finals in every tournament from 1954 to 2014.

And yet, 2026 has shown how quickly things can change. Germany was eliminated in the Round of 32 by Paraguay, continuing a run of recent World Cup struggles that would have seemed unthinkable a decade ago.

The chasing pack: Brazil, Italy, France, Argentina

Behind Germany, several soccer powerhouses have built their own semi-final legacies. (Important to note that there were no semifinals in 1950, 1974, and 1978.)

Brazil, the most successful team in World Cup history with five titles, have reached the semi-finals 8 times, combining flair with longevity on the global stage.

Italy and France are close behind, with seven and eight (including 2026) semi-final appearances, respectively. Both nations have paired consistency with multiple titles, reinforcing their place among the elite.

Argentina, meanwhile, continue to climb the list. Already among the top nations historically, they are back in the semi-finals again this year as defending champions, facing England with a chance to reach yet another final.

  • Germany: 12 times
  • France: 8 times (including 2026)
  • Brazil: 8 times
  • Italy: 7 times
  • Argentina: 6 times (including 2026)
  • England: 4 times (including 2026)

The 2026 World Cup Semifinals

What makes this year’s tournament so interesting is how it reflects a change in global soccer. For the first time in history, neither Germany nor Brazil even reached the quarter-finals.

Instead, the semi-finals are packed with teams that blend tradition with modern evolution. France and Argentina have been dominant in recent tournaments, Spain are in the midst of a new golden generation, having reached the semifinals for just the second time in their history, and England are chasing a long-awaited return to the top.

So while Germany still holds the all-time record for most World Cup semi-final appearances, the 2026 edition is a reminder that history is always being rewritten. And if this tournament has shown anything, it’s that even the most untouchable records may not stay that way forever.
