World Cup 2026

What happens if World Cup playoff games end in a tie?

With a World Cup place on the line in Europe and the intercontinental bracket, tied playoff games do not stay level for long.

Update:

With fewer than 80 days until the 2026 World Cup, the remaining qualification spots will be decided through single-leg playoff games in Europe and the intercontinental tournament during the March window.

That format leaves no room for drawn-out battles. If a playoff match is level after 90 minutes, it does not go to a replay or a second leg. Instead, the tiebreak process is immediate.

Extra time and penalties to decide

First comes extra time, with two 15-minute halves played in full. Teams are allowed to make an additional substitution during this period, giving coaches one more tactical option in a high-pressure moment.

If the score is still level after 120 minutes, the tie is settled by a penalty shootout.

That same structure applies across both UEFA’s four playoff paths and FIFA’s intercontinental playoff tournament, even though the latter uses a mini-bracket format with seeded teams entering at different stages.

The key point is simple: every game must produce a winner on the night.

For nations like Italy, Wales, Ukraine, or the Republic of Ireland, and outsiders such as New Caledonia or Suriname, that means qualification can hinge on a single moment beyond regulation time.

There are no second chances, no away goals, and no safety net.

Just 90 minutes, then 30 more if needed, and finally penalties if nothing else separates them. Fans may need some reinforced fingernails.
