Who is Amin Mohamed, referee for Argentina vs Austria in World Cup 2026 Group J?
Argentina are looking to take full control of the group, while an Egyptian will be in charge for the 90 minutes.
Argentina’s second game of World Cup 2026 will be overseen by a referee many fans may not know, but one who has spent years building a strong reputation across African soccer.
Egyptian official Amin Mohamed Omar has been appointed to take charge of the Group J meeting between Argentina and Austria in Dallas. He will be assisted by fellow Egyptians Mahmoud Abouelregal and Ahmed Hossam Taha, while Spain’s Alejandro Hernández and Diego Sánchez complete the on-field officiating team.
Meet Amin Mohamed Omar
Omar, 40, has been a FIFA-listed referee since 2017 and balances his work in soccer with a career as a lawyer. Domestically, he is a familiar figure in the Egyptian Premier League, where he has officiated nearly 200 top-flight games since 2013.
His experience extends well beyond Egypt. Omar has refereed Africa Cup of Nations matches and has regularly been selected for CAF Champions League fixtures, making him one of the continent’s most experienced active officials.
Has Amin Mohamed Omar refereed at a World Cup before?
Yes, but only very recently.
The Argentina-Austria match will be just the second World Cup game of his career. His tournament debut came earlier in this year’s competition when he took charge of the Group A opener between South Korea and Czechia in Guadalajara, a game won 2-1 by the Koreans.
That appointment was a milestone for Omar, who had previously worked major international and continental competitions but had never appeared at a FIFA World Cup.
Now he has been handed one of the most eye-catching fixtures of the second round of group-stage games, with Lionel Messi’s Argentina looking to follow up their opening victory over Algeria and Austria hoping to build on their impressive win against Jordan.
