Who is Valentín Barco and why did Jude Bellingham hit him after England’s World Cup defeat?
The England and Real Madrid midfielder had already clashed with Lionel Messi before striking the Argentina squad player during celebrations.
Jude Bellingham has been England’s standout player at the 2026 World Cup, scoring six goals between the opening group game and the quarterfinals. However, the Real Madrid star made headlines for the wrong reasons after the Three Lions’ semifinal defeat to Argentina.
In the first half, Bellingham was already involved in a heated exchange with Lionel Messi, although he played down the incident as “nothing” when speaking to reporters after the game. The 23-year-old also made a point of stressing that it had been a “privilege” to go up against the Inter Miami playmaker.
He presumably does not feel the same way about Argentina squad player Valentín Barco, who was clipped around the back of the head by Bellingham as he celebrated his country’s victory with teammates.
Why did Bellingham hit Barco?
Social media was initially flooded with clips of Bellingham making contact with Barco, although those videos did not show whether he had been provoked in any way.
Later, however, fan footage appeared to show Barco sprinting onto the field and goading several England players immediately after Enzo Fernández’s equalizer.
It appears Bellingham had not forgotten about the incident as Barco celebrated Argentina’s victory at full-time with his teammates around 15 minutes later. Additionally, it has been suggested Barco uttered an unknown but presumably less-than-polite phrase to Bellingham in Spanish, thinking the Englishman wouldn’t understand.
Whether that justifies using physical force, however, is another matter, and the Madrid midfielder could find himself in trouble with FIFA for putting his hands on an opposition player.
Who is Valentín Barco?
The 21-year-old Barco, nickamed ‘Colo,’ mainly plays as a left-back but has also been deployed as a winger and central midfielder during his career to date.
After starting out with Boca Juniors in his homeland, Barco signed for Premier League club Brighton in January 2024 but made only seven appearances for the club before departing.
He spent the first half of the 2024-25 season on loan at Sevilla in Spain before spending the final months of the campaign in France with Strasbourg, who he joined permanently in 2025.
Barco has been heavily linked with a move back to England with Chelsea, although no deal has been confirmed.
The young defender made his Argentina debut in a friendly against El Salvador in March 2024 and has since made five appearances for his country, scoring two goals. Barco has only played in one game at the 2026 World Cup, coming on as a substitute for the final 20 minutes of Argentina’s 3-1 group-stage win over Jordan.
