Argentina’s celebration after reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup final may come with unexpected consequences.

Several Argentina players displayed a political banner referring to the Falkland Islands after their semifinal victory over England, an act that could lead to disciplinary action under FIFA’s rules prohibiting political messages during official matches. While a fine for the Argentine Football Association (AFA) appears likely, FIFA could also investigate the players involved, and there is precedent for suspensions in similar cases.

FIFA has punished players for political messages before

The clearest example came at the 2012 London Olympics, when South Korea’s Park Jong-woo displayed a sign supporting South Korea’s claim to the disputed Liancourt Rocks, known as Dokdo in Korea and Takeshima in Japan, after defeating Japan in the bronze medal match.

Although the game had already ended, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee barred Park from participating in the medal ceremony. Unlike his 17 teammates, he did not receive his bronze medal on the podium. Months later, he was also handed a two-match suspension from international competition.

What do FIFA’s rules say?

FIFA’s Disciplinary Code and the Laws of the Game prohibit political, religious and personal messages from being displayed on the field or inside stadiums during official competitions.

Argentina has already been punished for a similar incident. In 2014, the AFA was fined after a banner reading “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” (“The Falkland Islands are Argentine”) was displayed.

Could Argentina players miss the World Cup final?

The incident is expected to trigger a FIFA investigation.

A financial penalty for the AFA is widely considered the most likely outcome. Individual sanctions against players are also possible, although they appear less certain because of the limited time before the World Cup final and the large number of players who participated in displaying the banner.

For now, FIFA has not announced whether any players could be suspended, leaving uncertainty over whether the incident will have consequences beyond a potential fine.
