Update:

If you hear a sudden roar of applause in the 76th minute of Scotland’s World Cup clash with Morocco on Friday, it will (most probably) have nothing to do with a goal, a save, or a controversial refereeing decision.

What is the Tartan Army’s 76th minute tribute?

The moment is for Donny Strathie, a Scotland fan who died in the United States while he was following the national team at the 2026 World Cup.

News of Strathie’s tribute was shared by Scottish newspaper The National, whose Instagram post quickly filled with messages from supporters, friends, and family. Born in Camelon and a lifelong resident of Grangemouth, Strathie was captain of Bowhouse in the Falkirk Pool League and a familiar face among Scotland fans.

He passed away on June 14, shortly after Scotland’s 1-0 win over Haiti.

Why is the applause happening in the 76th minute?

The reason is simple: Strathie was 76 years old so it seemed appropriate. Fellow supporters have organized a minute-long applause during the 76th minute against Morocco as a mark of respect for a man many describe as a devoted member of the Tartan Army.

The idea quickly gained traction online, with one supporter writing: “Don’t worry, the Tartan Army will do him proud.” Another touchingly added: “He’s going to have an amazing view of the game. RIP Donny.”

How did Scotland fans react?

The responses beneath The National’s post reveal just how deeply the news resonated.

“Heartbreaking,” wrote one fan, while another commented: “May he rest in eternal peace.”

One supporter reflected on the cruel timing, saying it was “so sad when people are so close to the dream,” given he had tickets for the game.

Others focused on the positive memories Strathie leaves behind. A relative described him as “a born entertainer who lived his life to the full and brightened up our lives for many a year.”

With this being the Scots’ first World Cup in 28 years, and it had been significantly longer since the team won a game, another fan possibly summed up the mood perfectly: “I’m glad at the fact that his last match was a win.”

When the clock hits 76 in Scotland vs Morocco, the applause will be less about mourning and more about celebrating one supporter who crossed the pond to follow his national heroes. And if the spirit shown in the stands can drive a positive result on the field, no doubt Donny will be smiling down too.
