Why does Colombia star Jhon Arias spell his name Jhon instead of John?
Errors can always occur, even in elite level logistics, and some people have asking about a certain player’s name.
Colombia’s national team gets its 2026 World Cup campaign up and running against Uzbekistan, which is the final game of the first round of the group stage. There is so much to discuss regarding the players, the manager, tactics, where Shakira is, and all the other potential narratives, but since you’re here, it means you, like me, have found yourself doing a double take at the name on the team sheet of the winger Jhon Arias.
Not John. Jhon.
At first glance, at least for those used to the former version, it looks like a typo that somehow escaped the birth certificate office. Or maybe the person in charge of the issuing the line ups was briefly distracted. But no. In Colombia, it is actually far more common than you might imagine.
The short story is that ‘Jhon’ became a popular alternative spelling of the English name ‘John’ in the South American nation during the late 20th century. The name is so widespread that there are dozens of Colombian athletes, footballers, cyclists, and other public figures called Jhon, including another soccer player Jhon Durán. In fact, Jhon is considered one of the most common male given names in the country.
Why the switch to Jhon in Colombia?
I’ve not been able to track down any official linguistic rule behind it. Researchers and naming experts generally view it as a local adaptation of the English name John. Because the English pronunciation does not map neatly onto Spanish spelling, families often experimented with different versions, just like ‘Jon’ is common in parts of Spain. Over time, ‘Jhon’ caught on and became a naming trend of its own.
The result is an almost uniquely Colombian quirk.
As for Arias himself, his full name is Jhon Adolfo Arias Andrade, and that is simply the name he was given at birth.
