In search of more minutes, Zach Steffen left Manchester City and joined Middlesbrough on a season-long loan. The United States goalkeeper made his debut in the Championship on Tuesday and made a terrible mistake in the season opener.

Steffen made his first start against Queen Park Rangers and in the 27th minute he did not look strong coming off his line following a corner kick. This mistake helped Jimmy Dunne’s header find the back of the net for the first goal of the match in QPR’s 3-2 win over Middlesbrough.

Steffen has a lot to improve on

This is not the first time that the USMNT goalkeeper has made a mistake but it may be due to the lack of minutes during his time with Manchester City. Steffen has a lot to improve on if he wants to be the United States’ starting goalkeeper in the upcoming FIFA World Cup in November.

The United States coach Gregg Berhalter has three European-based options for the starting job but Steffen wants to secure the role. That is why the former Columbus Crew goalkeeper moved to the Championship but he needs to improve to become the starting goalkeeper for club and country this campaign.
