Negotiations between Barcelona and Benfica over the transfer of Nelson Semedo will continue next week, according to Portuguese newspaper Record.

Mourinho's United keen on Semedo

Arsenal's lack of willingness to let Hector Bellerin move to Camp Nou has led Barcelona to pursue Semedo, the 23-year-old Portuguese. Barça appear unpeturbed by the fact that Semedo has not always played at right back.

Yet Barça face two obstacles. The first is Manchester United. José Mourinho sees Semedo, his compatriot, as a fine long-term option to compete with Antonio Valencia for the right-back berth. The Ecuadorian is about to turn 32.

Benfica unwilling to budge on price

The second obstacle is the price. Semedo has a release clause of €80m, and Luis Filipe Vieira, the Benfica president, would not be willing to allow the player to leave for less than €50m. For Benfica, that would represent a record fee received for a player.

Barça could consider offering a player to Benfica in a part-exchange detail. Ultimately, if Benfica are unwilling to lower the asking price below €50m, it is hard to see Nelson Semedo pulling on a Barcelona shirt next season.
