Relief for Neville as Valencia huff and puff their way to semis

Gary Neville's troubled reign in charge of Valencia was given a huge boost as Los Che progressed to the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey with a 1-0 win at Las Palmas on Thursday. After a 1-1 draw in the first-leg last week, Rodrigo's neat close range finish after 20 minutes was enough to seal a 2-1 aggregate win.

Valencia will be joined by holders Barcelona, Sevilla and Celta Vigo in Friday's semi-final draw.

Neville has yet to win in seven La Liga games since taking charge last month, but is undefeated in five matches in the Cup as Valencia have reached the semis for the first time in four years.

Any hope of the hosts pulling off a remarkable comeback were dashed when Vicente Iborra converted a ninth minute penalty.

Youngster Juan Muñoz then made the most of his first start to score his first goal for the senior team before Coke added a third in stoppage time.

Barcelona and Celta Vigo sealed their passage into the last four on Wednesday.

Celta produced the upset of the round as they became the first side since Barça exactly a year ago to score three goals in a game against Atlético Madrid to win 3-2 on the night and on aggregate at the Vicente Calderón.
