Ronaldo overtakes Messi in the hat-trick stakes again

The Real Madrid forward scored four against Celta on Saturday to bring up his 36th hat-trick for the club since arriving at the Bernabéu in 2009.

Cristiano Ronaldo edged ahead of Leo Messi in the number of hat-tricks scored by both players in Spain on Saturday when he scored four against Celta Vigo in Real’s 7-1 win at the Bernabéu. The Portuguese forward has now hit three or more goals in a match on 36 occasions for Real Madrid and took just 48 hours to overtake the Barcelona forward, who added his 35th in a claret and blue shirt on Thursday against Rayo Vallecano.

Ronaldo has spread his 36 trebles across four competitions: 30 in Primera División, four in the Champions League and two in the Copa del Rey. Messi’s tally of three-goal hauls is divided between 26 in the league, five in the Champions League, three in the Copa del Rey and one in the Spanish Supercup.
