Three reasons why Real Madrid don’t need David de Gea

Will Florentino Perez insist on bringing the Manchester United goalkeeper to Madrid? Here are three reasons why he shouldn't.

Keylor Navas and Kiko Casilla. Two reasons why Real Madrid do not need a repeat of last summer's embarrassing efforts to bring David de Gea to the Bernabéu. With the season Keylor Navas has had between the palos, it will be very difficult to sell a move to the fans, and Navas would not settle for second spot having proved he can live with the best at this level.

The Real Madrid goalkeeper is in with a shout for the club blanco's player of the season; Keylor's professionalism, dedication and world-class performances have seen him sainted among the madridista faithful: 'San Keylor' was favoured over De Gea by four out of five blanco fans in a survey conducted in March.

The Costa Rican's inspired showings have prompted headlines such as "Keylor Navas and ten passengers", "Like something out of the Matrix", and "Navas goes second in all-time list of shut-out runs".

Navas went 741 minutes without conceding in the Champions League this season, a run bettered only by Jens Lehman's tournament record of 853 consecutive minutes unsullied, set with Arsenal between February 2005 and September 2006.

Not only do Real Madrid have a brilliant no.1, however, Kiko Casilla also showed against Valencia in los blancos' penultimate La LIga encounter of 2015/16 that they have an able understudy too. Despite conceeding two, Casilla was essential to Real Madrid keeping their title hopes alive, making 6 crucial saves that helped his team to a 3-2 win.

The third reason why Real Madrid don't need David de Gea is €35M. That money could be used to strengthen the centre of defence, where Ramos hasn't been at his best, where Pepe has been plagued by injuries and where at times Varane has shown his inexperience.

Cover is also needed for Marcelo and Dani Carvajal, as Danilo has not proved worthy of his €31.5M price-tag from Porto, and if Real get their marquee signing Lewandowski, bringing De Gea in would mean a very costly holiday period indeed.

When asked if the club should bring the Manchester United player of the season back to where he wants to be: in Madrid with his girlfriend, singer Edurne - 6 out of seven Real Madrid goalkeeping legends said no.

None of that guarantees, of course, that Florentino Perez won't keep his personal promise to De Gea and bring him home, regardless of cost, with what is actually best for the club, and what the fans want coming second. Expect De Gea to be a hot summer topic, again.

David will be hoping that Florentino has at least updated the software this season:
