REAL MADRID

5 challenges facing Zidane ahead of the Uefa Super Cup

1. No clear No. 9

Having Marcelo (three goals) as pre-season top scorer is somewhat worrying with Benzema still troubled with injury and Morata yet to find his step within the squad. Zidane will be without the BBC in Norway and has acknowledged that Morata has yet to find his rhythm. Castilla player Mariano may be a useful back-up after his super strike against Chelsea.

No. 2: Over subscribed squad

The matter of dealing with players in an open transfer window is always a delicate subject for any coach and Zidane has publicly encouraged Jese to find a new team as negotiations are ongoing with PSG. Isco, James and Kovacic are the other Real Madrid players that the club would be prepared to sell following a suitable offer.

No. 3: Asensio only creative source

With no Kroos or Modrica at the heart of the midfield, Isco and Kovacic had poor games when given their chance in the two friendlies. The same can't be said for Marco Asesnio with the 20 year being one of the better Madrid players in pre-season so far. Ahead of the tour, the players future at the Bernabeu for the 2016/17 campaign was under question but the Mallorcan born has certainly enough to convince the French coach to date.

No 4: Lack of time to prepare a 442 system.

As soon as it was confirmed that Cristiano would miss the game in Trondheim, Zidane started to work with a 4-4-2 formation with the idea being that Morata and Benzema lead the forward line. The injury to the French striker has hampered his planning with all members of the BBC set to miss the Super Cup final.

No 5: Early season rustiness

Real Madrid will have only played three pre-season games when the Super Cup comes around and that early season rustiness is still apparent and was clearly evident in the opening game against PSG with the French side netting three goals in thirty minutes with Varane and Marcelo culpable. The Marcelo-Varane-Nacho-Carvajal back line did look more solid in the game against Chelsea.
