Leganés reset Real Madrid's league record from 1929

Leganés are enjoying a dream start to Spain's top flight and last night's draw against Atlético mean they have broken a league record set by Real Madrid 87 years ago.

As fairytale starts go, Leganés couldn't have hoped for a much better start to life in Spain's Division of Honour. The Pepineros have posted a win away from home and held last year's Champions League runners-up in their first home in the top flight on Saturday. That meant they tucked themselves up into bed last night with the knowledge that the team was sitting third, if only provisionally, in the league standings.

But Asier Garitano's men managed another feat last night, setting a new record which has stood since the very first league campaign in Spain in 1929. Leganés have gone the longest without conceding in their maiden season in the top flight. As our colleague Pedro Martin revealed on Twitter, the previous record was held by Real Madrid who went 160 minutes without conceding* when the Spanish league was inaugurated in February 1929. 'Lega' now have a couple of weeks to enjoy their record, let it sink in but they will be hoping to extend it in their next outing, as guests of Sporting at El Molinón.

Garitano however, wants to see a lot more from his team. "The good thing is that we gained another point, but we were nowhere near winning the match... and I don't like that. It was a bad game by our standards - we need to show more - we didn't even have a shot on target. If we don't give ourselves a chance to win games, then sooner or later, other teams are going to beat us and we have to be winning our matches if we want to stay in this division", he said afterwards.

*Madrid won their very first league game by beating CD Europa 5-0 in Chamartín on 10 February 1929; they also won their second game, against Barcelona in Les Corts but conceded late in the game - to Manuel Parera, the first Barça player to score against Madrid, and also the first Barça player to score in LaLiga having found the net in their previous game against Racing de Santander
