Rodri-Real Madrid links come up against Mourinho factor
Under returning head coach José Mourinho, Real Madrid’s soccer identity is headed in a direction that doesn’t fit Rodri’s style of play.
There has been plenty of speculation surrounding Real Madrid in recent days, with reports claiming the club has already aligned itself with the financial demands Rodri is seeking for a future contract that would bring his spell at Manchester City to an end. Some have even gone so far as to suggest an agreement with Los Blancos is effectively in place.
Inside Valdebebas, however, the message is very different. Club sources insist there is no truth to those claims and believe that, as has happened on several occasions in the past, a narrative is being built around the future of the World Cup Golden Ball winner that bears little resemblance to reality. Madrid have no interest in becoming part of that conversation. Spain’s triumph, orchestrated by the influential midfielder, has reignited a debate many believed had already been settled. Yet, according to figures within the club, there remains little substance behind the rumors.
For now, nothing has changed a situation that became something of an irritation during the World Cup, much as it had on previous occasions. In fact, there is a belief within the club that any potential Rodri-Real Madrid scenario might have unfolded differently had the midfielder not been so persistently linked with the Spanish giants over the years. If there was ever a genuine path back to LaLiga through Real Madrid, those constant reports may ultimately have worked against him.
At Valdebebas, club officials grew frustrated by the repeated use of Madrid’s name despite there being no contact between the parties. Sources indicate that Madrid executives even reached out to their counterparts at City to deny the alleged discussions. The situation did Rodri no favors. As Diario AS has learned, Mourinho’s Madrid is currently moving toward a different footballing model, one that is less possession-oriented and less dependent on the kind of cerebral, controlling midfield presence Rodri provides. That said, the club continues to hold the Spain international in the highest regard.
A signing some are calling for
At the same time, there are voices within the upper levels of the Bernabéu hierarchy who believe signing Rodri would give the team a stronger footballing identity while also delivering a significant boost from a marketing and profile perspective, particularly after the prominence he achieved during the World Cup.
From a technical standpoint, Madrid’s assessment of Rodri is overwhelmingly positive. They view him as a cornerstone of Spain’s success and acknowledge the central role he has played in many of City’s greatest achievements. For now, though, those opinions remain in the background rather than driving the club’s transfer strategy.
What is beyond dispute is that Rodri’s future is very much in play. His current contract expires in one year’s time, and his performances have only increased his market value. With the player reportedly unwilling to sign an extension, City is said to be exploring options for a transfer. Based on what he displayed in North America, any deal could command a fee in the region of $70 million.
The widespread perception is that Rodri would like to return to LaLiga and that Real Madrid would be his preferred destination. The reality, however, is that the midfielder has consistently shown the utmost respect toward his current club. City, meanwhile, is entering a new era following Pep Guardiola’s departure and the arrival of Enzo Maresca.
The best player at the World Cup
Rodri emerged as the standout performer of the recent World Cup. His influence on Spain’s play resonated throughout the soccer world, earning him recognition as the tournament’s best player across 104 matches despite not scoring a single goal or registering an assist. In a sport increasingly obsessed with individual statistics, that fact speaks volumes about the impact the City midfielder had on the competition.
His name has been a constant topic of discussion for months, but now there are tangible reasons behind the attention. Rodri has demonstrated that the form which earned him the 2024 Ballon d’Or is fully back. That is the biggest story of all.
With his performances, he has won over virtually everyone in the game. Rodri remains a player capable of imposing a style of play, dictating the rhythm of matches, and serving as the ultimate reference point both in building attacks and breaking down opponents. For now, however, Mourinho’s Real Madrid appears to be heading in a different tactical direction.
