West Ham United have announced the signing of former Real Madrid full-back Álvaro Arbeloa on a free transfer.

One-year contract at the Olympic Stadium

The 33-year-old Spaniard has penned a one-year deal with the Premier League outfit after passing a medical on Wednesday.

Arbeloa had been without a club since leaving Real at the end of last season after seven campaigns at the Santiago Bernabéu, where he also began his career.

Experience of the Premier League

The defender previously had a two-and-a-half-year spell in the English top flight with Liverpool, having moved to the Reds from Deportivo La Coruña in 2007.

Arbeloa had two and a half seasons in England with Liverpool.

Arbeloa "really happy to be back in England"

The World Cup winner, who collected 56 caps for Spain, told West Ham's in-house TV station: "I am really happy to be here in a great club in a great league."

He added: "I'm really happy to be back in England and, for me, it's a great chance and I'm looking forward to playing with this side."

Arbeloa, also part of the successful Spanish squads at Euro 2008 and 2012, becomes Hammers boss Slaven Bilic's 12th summer addition.
