Zidane's Real Madrid one game off Beenhaker's all time record
Since the loss against Wolfsburg on 6 April Real Madrid have won 24 games and drawn nine. If Zidane can avoid defeat against Dortmund another record will be his.
More than 240 days since deefat
It was back on 6 April when Real Madrid last lost a match. Since that 2-0 defeat at the hands of Wolfsburg in the Champions League last-16 away leg the team have won 24 games and drawn nine. That run included, among other accolades, being crowned European champions for an unprecendented eleventh time, and has Zinedine Zidane currently preciding over a team that has the second best number of consecutive games without defeat.
Bernabéu record books beckon
In first place is Leo Beenhaker, the Dutch coach that was in charge of Los Blancos during the 1988/89 season where they went 34 games undefeated. Another Madrid manager who put a strong run together was Zidane's predecesor, Carlo Ancelotti. His side went 32 games without losing which has now been overtaken by the Frenchman after the draw at the Camp Nou. If Real Madrid can avoid defeat in their next game - at home to Borussia Dortmund in the final Champions League group match - then Zidane will equal Beenhaker's record and will have another home game, against relegation-fighting Deportivo, to stand alone in the Bernabéu books.
Targets further afield
The Spanish record for most consecutive games without defeat, in all competitions, was set just last season, and by Zidane's opposite number in the Clásico, Luis Enrique, whose Barça side went 39 games without adding to the "L" column in the table. Looking further afield, Brian Clough's legendary Nottingham Forest side didn't taste defeat for 40 games in the 1977/78 campaign and Antonio Conte's Juventus topped the lot in 2011/12 with a run of 43 games.
Just like the most recent challenge against Barcelona, there have been several games during this current run where Madrid have looked like they were going to lose. But they keep finding the answer.
