FC Barcelona vs Borussia Monchengladbach

Borussia Mönchengladbach defender Álvaro Dominguez has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 27 after a series of serious injuries.

In a video published on the ex-Atletico Madrid player’s Twitter account, Dominguez said: “I’d like to send a message to the fans of Borussia Mönchengladbach and Atlético Madrid who’ve always shown me so much care.

"Terrible condition"

“I’ve been playing in a terrible condition the last few years and been obliged to carry on playing. This has led me to two operations and has led me to some consequences that I’m still suffering today.

“This means that today I have to say goodbye to you and this sport that I am so passionate about. No one would like to be an invalid at 27-years old. This is the price that I will have to pay."

The centre-back played 120 times for Atletico, made 109 appearances for ‘Gladbach and won two caps for Spain.
