Former Valencia manager Cesare Prandelli has hit out at the club in an interview with Premium Sport. The Italian technician, who left his post at the end of December over the club’s protracted negotiations to sign Simone Zaza, who eventually arrived at Mestalla halfway through January, has expanded on his reasons for departing just six months into a two-year contract.

At Valencia they think that because they are the fourth-richest club they should end the season in fourth place in the table. They have a purely financial viewpoint, not a technical one,” Prandelli said.

“Football does not work like this. I was told I would be the coach and the manager, but in reality I was never afforded the chance. We had agreed on the signing of Zaza and I could not accept the president coming me to 20 days later to ask if I wanted a midfielder instead. I felt undermined and preferred to rescind my contract.”
